The government is taking more and more measures to make the Netherlands more sustainable and to accelerate the energy transition. One of these measures concerns the energy label of offices. Dutch offices should have a better energy label in the future. According to one estimate, the majority does not yet comply.
As of 1 January 2023, offices must have at least energy label C registered. It is estimated that this represents 62,000 of the 97,000 offices. The obligation does not apply to offices which perform a different function in addition to an office function. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) estimated the number of offices that currently meet this requirement. According to current estimates, this figure is currently around 34%, an increase of 2% compared to the beginning of this year. The report also shows that 12% of offices have an energy label D or less. 54% of Dutch offices do not yet have a registered energy label.
The number of offices with energy label A-C increased from 1,138 in 2012 to 21,441 in 2020. Before 2012, no energy label was registered at most offices.
The increase in the number of registrations seems to have slowed down a bit over the past six months. This is dedicated to the corona crisis. The RVO suspects that many entrepreneurs do not want to invest in the energy label or do not currently have the financial resources for it. So quite a few steps still need to be taken before all offices in the Netherlands have a minimum energy label C in 2023.
There are several possibilities to achieve a better energy label and to realize a more sustainable office building. Making an office building more sustainable often requires an initial investment, but leads to long-term cost savings. The RVO offers various subsidies and schemes to support energy-saving measures. Small gains can already be achieved by, for example, the use of LED lighting and ensuring good insulation. In addition, there are opportunities to achieve larger profits. This can be done by placing solar panels on the roofs, or by investing in a solar carport.
